Sponsoring Community Organization – OCO – description below, and the Immigrant Legal Resource Center

The purpose of the meeting is two-fold: a) inform people about the California Drivers License for undocumented community b) to offer individual consultations on related immigration issues

Your participation is critical in accomplishing both objectives.

We invite you to witness the entire meeting. For those with more limited time, we need you to arrive a few minutes before the time set for the start of the consultations (above).  The organization will introduce all the attorneys to the audience at the end of the meeting – before the consultations begin.

These consultations are by necessity shorter than those you provide in your offices.

Practitioners have found this to be a great way to help the immigrant community help themselves, provide much needed information, and learn from colleagues.

Please confirm your participation by sending an email  to Emma at OCO  at emmap@oaklandcommunity.org

We hope you can join us.

OCO is a federation of 55 congregations and 25 schools members. OCO  represents around 45,000 people in Oakland. We are a faith base non profit organizations

Stanford Law School

The Fourth Annual Worksite Immigration Compliance Symposium is sponsored by the Stanford Rock Center for Corporate Governance, Stanford Law School, Federal Bar Association (Chicago Chapter), Silicon Valley Directors’ Exchange (SVDX) and the Markkula Center for Applied Ethics.

The session will explore strategies and solutions to current and future employer responsibilities and will discuss in detail how to strike the right balance between labor and employment constraints, adherence to government regulations, and the need to run a profitable enterprise on behalf of shareholders and owners.

The Symposium, in the form of panel discussions and keynotes presented by government officials, private practitioners and academics, will evaluate the legal and policy implications of current law, the impact on corporate behavior and the resulting corporate challenges with employees, unions, shareholders, and state and federal agencies. Hi everyone,

The East Bay Naturalization Collaborative (EBNatz) is putting together another free naturalization workshop next month and we’re looking for volunteers!

The workshop will take place at the Fremont Family Resource Center on Saturday, October 18th.  Volunteers will be asked to arrive at 8:30 am and the doors will open to the public at 9:30 am.  Depending on how many participants come, we may end around 4-5 pm.

As usual, anyone and everyone who wants to volunteer can do so.  No legal knowledge is necessary.  We need volunteers to assist in a variety of capacities, including interpreting, form filling, and logistics.  If you speak Spanish, Farsi, Cantonese, or Mandarin, or any other second language, your assistance interpreting for applicants who may be monolingual would be greatly appreciated.  More information on volunteer training will come as we get closer to the event

If you would like to volunteer at our Fremont workshop, please sign up here: http://ebnatz.org/wp/volunteer/
We wouldn’t be able to help our community without wonderful volunteers like you.  Please feel free to pass this around to whoever you think may be interested in volunteering!

Sincerely,

Amy Wang

Dear fellow AILA members:

As you know, CRLA Foundation’s annual event, “Luchando Por Justicia,”takes place on Friday, September 26th at the California Museum in downtown Sacramento.

I can personally say that this is a fabulous event in a lovely outdoor setting, that I have enjoyed each year for the past several years.

As a Host Committee Member for this year’s event, I encourage you to attend.  This year is particularly special, because CRLA Foundation will be honoring two of our most respected and well-known local immigration attorneys, Michael Schoenleber and Mary Waltermire.  Together, Mary & Mike have advocated for immigrants in our community for decades and have also provided amazing support to fellow attorneys with advice, leadership, and commitment to AILA.

Also, CRLA Foundation is offering a special discount price of $100 to AILA members for placing a congratulatory messagefor Mary & Mike in this year’s commemorative program.

***To RSVP and buy tickets for this event, go to:  http://www.eventbrite.com/e/luchando-por-justicia-tickets-12698799451.

Testimonials from the 2013 and 2012 NDA scholarship recipients

“My experience at the National Day of Action was fun, interesting and rewarding. I had the chance to deepen my relationships with colleagues from the Northern California delegation and meet practitioners from around the country. 2013 was an a big year for the prospects immigration reform, and there was a palpable sense of hope and excitement from advocates as well as legislative aides. It was fascinating to see how different congresspersons’ offices treated our delegation, and I learned a lot about their priorities and interests. That information helped me contextualize news stories that came out as the year went on, and I felt I was able to better follow developments at the federal level. Finally, I was able to practice my advocacy skills during the meetings we had with legislators, which assisted me in working towards passing local detainer reform in San Francisco last fall.” Laura Polstein, Esq. 2013 NDA Scholarship Recipient From The Central American Resource Center (CARECEN)

“The National Day of Action is an invaluable experience, especially for those that provide direct legal representation for clients.  Often our client’s stories and voices are not heard at the highest level where immigration laws and policies are made.  As a community based organization, we often do not have great ways to help our clients bring these messages to Washington DC either.  In particular, since most of our clients are low-income immigrants victims of violent crime (including domestic violence, sexual assault, and human trafficking), they are extremely vulnerable and it is important that their experiences are shared. This was particularly pertinent this year because of Congress’ inability to reauthorize the Violence Against Women’s Act and the Trafficking Victims Protection Act.  However, with the National Day of Action, we were able to talk directly to politicians and convey information about our clients and the invisible constituents in their areas.  The National Day of Action was also well-organized, allowing us to use great briefing points on issues I was less familiar with, while also offering guidance on how to organize and present information on issues I was prepared to speak on. I highly recommend this experience to anyone so that they can help their client’s stories impact national immigration policy and legislation.”  Cindy C. Liou, Esq. 2012 NDA Scholarship Recipient From Asian Pacific Island Legal Outreach (APILO)

Sacramento CLE Opportunity Feb 8 2013

Operation Protect and Defend, an organization of Sacramento judges and attorneys who volunteer to dialogue with high school seniors on important constitutional issues announces their annual MCLE luncheon, which will be held at the Firehouse Restaurant on Friday, February 8. The topic for the luncheon is “Equal Protection in Public Education: From Mendez v. Westminster to U.S. v. Alabama.”

This year’s luncheon features Professors Brian Landsberg and Linda Carter of McGeorge Law School, both of whom worked on the Plyler v. Doe Supreme Court case that addressed the rights of undocumented children to K-12 education. This is a great opportunity for AILA members to learn more about the constitutional issues underlying laws affecting our undocumented clients in K-12 as well as university education.

The attached invitation has additional information about OPD, how to volunteer for the classroom visits, and this year’s topic.

Attorney volunteers are invited to participate at the DACA Clinic on Saturday, February 9, 2013, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Sobrato Center for Nonprofits at 330 Twin Dolphin Drive, Redwood City. This DACA clinic is co-sponsored by Community Legal Services in East Palo Alto (CLSEPA) and Legal Aid of San Mateo County.

This event will be free. About 15 clients are expected to attend for a final review of their DACA applications (assisted by trained non-immigration attorneys ). The organizers need immigration attorneys to lend their expertise.

If you are interested in coming to the event or have any questions please e-mail Janet B. Seldon, jbseldon@legalaidsmc.org, Director of Pro Bono for Legal Aid of San Mateo County.
