Founded in 2009, the African Advocacy Network (AAN) is a San Francisco Bay Area based

organization that serves one of the fastest growing groups of immigrants, African and Afro-
Caribbean immigrants with immigration legal and social services. AAN’s mission is to be an

outstanding social and immigration legal service provider through the delivery of quality services

by BIA Accredited staff and the recently created removal defense attorney position in a

culturally and linguistically supportive environment. At the community level, AAN aims to tap

into the strength and resilience of African and Afro-Caribbean immigrants and refugees in the

Bay area and equip them with the tools they need to lead independent, productive, and dignified

lives.

This position is a great opportunity to join a fast-growing organization and lead the growth of our

immigration department. We are recruiting an experienced attorney to join our growing legal

team and increase our capacity to represent clients in removal proceedings. In addition to legal

representation, the ideal candidate will also work with partner organizations as part of the

Attorney of the Day Program (AOD), engage in community education, outreach and advocacy;

and work with other community partners in coordinating efforts to protect our immigrant

communities.

Duties and Responsibilities

 Provide direct legal representation to detained and non-detained persons in removal

proceedings before the San Francisco Immigration Court, the US Citizenship &

Immigration Services (USCIS), the Board of Immigration Appeals, and the Ninth Circuit

Court of Appeals;

 Visit detainees at Bay Area detention centers;

 Participate in the organization’s administrative meetings, collaborative meetings with

other legal and social providers, and community activities and trainings;

 Manage pro-bono attorney recruitment program.

Qualifications

 Juris Doctor and an active member of the Bar

 Minimum 3 years of experience practicing immigration law including removal

proceedings;

 Comfortable working without supervision and able to work as part of a team;

 Ability to work with low-income African and Afro-Caribbean immigrants;

 Commitment to advance immigrant rights and promote community empowerment;

 Excellent written and oral skills;

 Fluency in French, Amharic, Tigrinya (or other languages) a plus
