Asian Pacific Islander Legal Outreach (APILO) is the largest nonprofit social justice law firm serving the Asian American and Pacific Islander communities of the Greater Bay Area. Established in 1975, APILO provides multi-lingual and culturally appropriate legal services, advocacy and community outreach to the low-income API communities with a focus on domestic violence, immigrant rights, senior law, social justice, youth outreach and human trafficking.
With a staff of more than 20 (including more than 10 attorneys on staff), we currently provide legal services in more than a dozen different Asian languages and dialects. APILO invites project proposals from third-year law students and recent law graduates for Skadden, Equal Justice Works (NAPIL), echoing green, New Voices, Soros or other fellowships to begin in Fall 2007.
In recent years, APILO has been awarded:
- Berkeley Law Fellowship to conduct domestic violence outreach in the Vietnamese community through nail salons
- New Voices Fellowship to develop a regional center against human trafficking
- Equal Justice Works fellowship to provide leadership development and legal services in the Lao community
- Equal Justice Works fellowship to provide legal services in the Filipino community.
Fellowship applicants will be considered on the strength of their project proposals, their commitment and experience in working with low-income API communities, and their demonstrated ability to work creatively and independently. Legal Fellows will be supervised by the Managing Attorney and mentored by other staff attorneys.
