The California Supreme Court authorized the program for certifying legal specialists so attorneys could independently demonstrate their skills, protect the public, and get credit for the lifelong learning that is so critical for an immigration and nationality lawyer.

Almost 200 immigration and nationality attorneys have earned this designation. Be the next to join them and set yourself apart. Get credit for your expertise, and give clients peace of mind by becoming a certified specialist in Immigration & Nationality Law!

Learn about one attorney’s reason for becoming a certified specialist here.

To become a board certified specialist, an attorney must pass the examination, demonstrate experience and continuing education in the area, and secure references in the community regarding his or her practice. Certification shows clients and the court that you have a broad and strong base of practice, commitment to this areas of law and current knowledge in a practice where this is very important.

Business attorneys, in particular, should take notice of the adjustments in the rules designed to better reflect your practice. Updated program standards keep the total level of experience required the same, but flexibility was added to the mix of experience to reduce the minimum number of deportation hearings to a manageable number of five, which a business attorney can satisfy through pro bono work. Now, the program more fully supports all immigration & nationality attorneys.

You are eligible to register for the examination if you are a member of the State Bar of California and you have practiced as an immigration attorney since at least January 2014.  You will have an additional 36 months after taking the exam to complete the task, education, and reference requirements.

You can study for the one-day examination while working. The examination consists of 75 multiple-choice questions and eight 30-minute short answer essays. For full details about the exam or to register, visit www.californiaspecialist.org.
